Economv Performance of three-year-old 1.8 litre Tovota Corolla.
As promised, I have set out the result of the economy test that my wife and I made on our recent return trip to Melbourne.
We had a trip from Laurieton to Melbourne and return during November 2007 so I decided to do a thorough petrol economy test to see how the car might have improved since we added a"Twister" to the air intake.
On l lth November I filled the tank to overflowing at Caltex Laurieton. From then on I recorded the litres we added at fuel stops, concluding at Cundletown on November 24th by filling the tank to overflowing once again.
The trip of 2813 kilometres used 1968.4 litres of fuel, which would work out at 6.99 litres per 100 kilometres.
The type of driving included several stops for road works, some very easy sections, and one horrific session in a Melbourne traffic jam which took us almost an hour to move about 20 kilometres.
Between bowsers, the best section returned 3.37litres per 100 kilometres; the worst section that included Melbourne traffic jams returned 11.03 litres per 100 kilometres; the Wodonga to Melbourne section saw 4.91 litres per 100 kilometers.
Before the trip to Melbourne one test I made(with the 'Twister' installed) was 1536 kilometres for 88.71 litres which works out as 5.77 litres per 100 kilometres. The driving for that test was all local trips: shopping, visiting, with none longer than a trip to Port Macquarie.

By comparison, since we took delivery of the Corolla until we installed the'Twister' the total average was 8.53 litres per 100 kilometres. The trip south to Melbourne showed a saving of 1.54litres per 100 kilometres, or 18% improvement.
As our car originally was quite economical to drive, I had not expected much improvement, so you can see I am happy with the above result.
